Always a Hairdresser- an autobiography

I have been a hairdresser my whole life. My mom can attest to that: from She-Ra to Miss Piggy, I gave a cut and color to any doll that had hair.  In elementary school, I can remember being scolded for braiding the locks of the girls who sat in front of me in class.

Still, I didn’t pursue a career as a hair stylist right away.

I went through of few years of growing pains, spending time at youth shelter in New York City (1997), Bible college in Memphis, Tenn., (1999), and working as the outreach coordinator for a high profile non-profit organization called The SALT in Los Angeles (2000). I quickly became internationally acclaimed as the "conservative" voice of generation X.

In the summer of 2001, I resigned from The SALT.  I took the time to educate others about the importance of diversity; I also wanted to create a safe environment for youth to ask the tough questions they were faced with. So, I founded StandOut! a lgbt and allies youth organization that strives to equip young people to be leaders in their generation.

Through mwww.thehouseofwadelee.comy work with StandOut! I have received a great deal of print and broadcast media attention: featuredwww.thehouseofwadelee.com in the international teen  magazine Seventeen; featured twice in the national newsmagazine The Advocate; highlighted both in the Human Rights Campaign publication of Free at Last, the book Anything but Straight, written by Wayne Besen, and the documentary film Fish Can't Fly, directed/produced by Tom Murray . Now seasoned as a television and radio personality, I have appeared on networks and programs such as the BBC, CNN, ABC’s 20/20, Fox News' Alan Colmes Talk Radio in New York City and numerous other media outlets.

I needed a break from the public life of speaking engagements and media interviews. In the winter of 2001, I moved to Huntsville,  Ala., and landed a job as a salon manager for the Regis Corporation’s Trade Secret Salon.

The next logical step was to enroll in beauty school, which I started as my salon was breaking company goals month after month (it helped that I had an awesome team).  www.thehouseofwadelee.com

Across town a new mall was being built, I was asked by the Regis Corp.  to manage the new location as well. I knew then, that I was either insane to take on another salon or truly in love with the beauty business. In February of 2004, I competed in my first hair competition, the USA Beauty Open in Chicago.

After four years as a salon manager/hair stylist at two very successful salons, I was ready to spread my wings. I moved back to my home state of Wisconsin and trained under Tony Jensen of Hair. I spent a year as an apprentice of Tony’s. www.thehouseofwadelee.com

He pushed me to do better. I learned to be disciplined and precise in hair cutting. He allowed me to be creative in coloring, which gave me a deeper understanding of the art of hair.

In 2006, unhappy with the cold weather of the midwest I interviewed with Stephanie’s Hair Design and Day Spa in Peoria, Ariz. It was a perfect fit, with Stephanie’s dedication to the beauty industry and my experience as a hair stylist. I quickly built a name for myself in the West Valley. While at Stephanie’s,

I competed in the prestigious North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), trained in New York City with Bumble and Bumble to become a network educator, established and implemented new hire training programs and educated staff on product knowledge, hair cutting and coloring techniques.

With the closing of Stephanie’s in May of 2008, came the opening of my dream -- The House of Wade Lee. Hard work does pay off!

Since opening The Houswww.thehouseofwadelee.come of Wade Lee, I have become a member of the Peoria Chamber of Commerce and the West Valley Wedding Association, as well as the official hair stylist of Arizona Broadway Theatre.

I love what I do, and am so grateful to be a hairdresser. I'm blessed to have the support system of a loving family, caring friends, and loyal clients.

This is only the beginning for The House of Wade Lee. As I establish this company, I believe it will be a front-runner in fashion, beauty and hair not only in the West Valley, but abroad.
